Fishing & Angling in Corbett Adventure Tour

Angling is not only permitted in Corbett National Park, it’s openly encouraged and is one of our many attractions. The combination of luxury accommodation, fantastic natural scenery, legendary Indian hospitality and world class fishing make a trip to Jim Corbett National Park a pilgrimage all true anglers must undertake.

The main quarry for the adventurous angler is the legendary Mahseer (barbus tor); a fish that is similar in characteristics to the European Barbel, but with the abundance of food in our rivers grows to nearly ten times its size. As the seasoned angler will know hooking a specimen barbel in a fast flowing river is akin to hooking the 7.43 London to Birmingham Express train. Imagine what that is like in a bigger more powerful river with a fish weighing in excess of 50lb (25kg) and you start to get the picture. In fact it’s been rumoured that some these fish are sometimes unaware that they have even been hooked.

To get a feel for this area of India we recommend you read Major Corbett’s book "Man Eaters of Kumaon", his exciting stories of hunting tigers and his accounts of the flora and fauna are a must read. This is not a work of fiction it is a true account of the man himself. In the chapter “The fish of dreams” he recounts the tale of one evening fishing for his supper when he encounters one of these Tigers of the River and the ensuing fight to land a 50lb monster.

The area Major Corbett encountered his dream fish is still as it was then, an area of outstanding natural beauty, unspoilt by the passage of time. So when you visit you can fish in the same part of the Ramganga Valley as the Major, although we would recommend using some more modern equipment, Jim was only expecting to catch a fish suitable for his meal and so only used a light trout rod.

The Golden Mahseer Fish is one of the great Asian fish and the chance of catching one of these hard fighting specimens has lured anglers to this magnificent area of Indian dating back to the 1830’s. It is to this day considered one of the most exciting sport fish in the World, combine this with a vacation to area of India considered to have some of most beautiful scenery in the World and you have the holiday of a lifetime.

Techniques for enticing one of these giants on to the end of your line include spoon (spinning), lure, fly and a variety of hook baits including live bait. As they are omnivorous their natural diet includes snails, crabs, shrimp and certain freshwater vegetation. As for size, fish have been recorded in excess of 100lb (50kg), with many more stories of bigger fish escaping the hook,  these fisherman’s tales have filled the dreams of anglers for generations, the monsters are out there you have to catch one.

Stalking your Prey.

As with all specimen hunting good water craft is an essential skill, with our local knowledge, our guides can help find the most likely spot. After spawning the large Mahseer can be often located near large shoals of minnows tracking the tiny fish. This is by far the most proven method, but at times when there is an abundance of natural food this legend of the deep can be much more elusive so the angler must employ other tactics.

You must be ready for a fight of gigantic proportions, one minute you can be casually flicking out your lure, with only the sounds of nature filling your being, the next you’re locked in a battle of life and death (well in the mind of the fish), with a foe that can navigate these great rivers with ease. Whatever equipment you deploy these great fish will test it to its limit, and also test you, you don’t just need brute strength that’s not enough to subdue the Great Mahseer. You will need skill, a certain amount of diplomacy and endurance.

To comply with modern angling etiquette we would prefer you return your catch so it may live to fight another day and give another angler the thrill of hooking one of these miracles of nature.

Best Time to Visit.

Jim Corbett National Park is a beautiful place to visit whatever the time of year, but if you want to grace your wall with a picture of you holding one of these great fish we recommend the months of October, November and April. June is also an excellent month especially if the spawning period is over.

If you are an angler and want the fishing holiday of a lifetime please contact us for more information.
